A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
